Bolide 27: The 100-Year-Old Bag That Pioneered the Zipper

Hello from Thierry Studio.

Among Hermès bags, there is one

with a history stretching back 100 years.

It is the Bolide.

An icon with a century of history,

it also holds the distinction

of being the world’s first zippered handbag.

The Bolide was created in 1923

by Émile-Maurice Hermès, grandson

of the house’s founder, Thierry Hermès.

What made it special was the use

of the then-new zipper on a bag for the first time.

In the early 1920s, Émile-Maurice

visited a Ford factory while traveling in the United States.

There, he noticed the zippers

used on the soft tops of Ford cars.

Fascinated by this innovative fastening,

he decided to use it on an Hermès bag.

That bag became the Bolide.

“Bolide” is French

for a racing car, a reference

to its origins as the first travel bag

conceived for journeys by car.

A zipper that could be opened and closed quickly

was a breakthrough at the time,

making belongings easy to reach while traveling.

Since its debut in 1923,

the Bolide has remained a firm favorite.

For over a century, it has held its place

among Hermès’ signature bags,

admired for both its design and practicality.

Hermès has preserved the Bolide’s traditional look

while continually introducing new sizes and colors,

giving its classic beauty a contemporary feel.

It is now available in sizes including

Mini, 25, 27, 31, 35 and 45,

with a variety of leathers to choose from.

Among these, the Bolide 27

is loved for combining a compact size

with useful carrying capacity.

Although just 27 cm wide,

its interior has enough room

for essentials such as a phone,

wallet and cosmetics.

The rounded leather patch

on the front of the Bolide 27

was designed as a place for the owner’s name,

in keeping with the bag’s travel origins.

As well as being carried by hand,

the Bolide has a shoulder strap,

giving you different ways to style it.

The handles are carefully joined

to the body, with Hermès’

distinctive saddle stitching on display.

The zipper is the bag’s defining innovation,

making belongings easy to reach

both while traveling and in everyday use.

There is also an H-shaped detail at the zipper stop.

The zipper is by Riri,

a luxury brand known worldwide for its quality.

One characteristic is the V-shaped

herringbone weave on the zipper tape.

The Hermès logo stamp

is found on the leather inside the bag.

That concludes our look

at the Bolide,

a bag with a century of history.

Thank you 🙂
